History

- Forty Years of Faith
  with St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church
  On May 29, 1980, St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church was established by His Excellency, The Most Reverend Thomas Tschoepe, D.D., Bishop of Dallas, who appointed The Reverend Robert J. Curran founding pastor of the parish. The first years of the new parish saw weekend celebrations of Mass at the VFW in Garland. "Old-timers" remember well going to Mass on Sunday morning with the smell of beer wafting in from an adjoining room.
  September 5, 1980, the first Mass within the parish boundaries was celebrated in a chapel, converted from the garage of the newly-purchased rectory on Trails. Attendance continued to grow, and on October 18, 1981, groundbreaking for a new church building took place at 950 Trails Parkway. Construction was concluded in August, and on the seventh day of that month, the church was dedicated to the glory of God and for the people of St. Michael's parish.
  Another important moment in the life of the parish came on August 14, 1988, when ground was broken for a new parish hall. Although construction of the new building caused significant disruption, there was only joy when, on October 1, 1989, the new parish hall was dedicated for use.
  St. Michael's Church has been blessed with priests who have led us in our spiritual journey in becoming close to Christ. We are grateful for those men who have served our parish:

  Our parish has experienced a mix of challenges and joys in the past forty years. Over time, our community has expanded significantly. Through God's Grace, the support of parishioners, and Father Sharp's passion for music, a pipe organ was installed in 2004. In 2005, on May 1st, we marked our twenty-fifth anniversary with a Mass that highlighted our diverse backgrounds. In 2021, we introduced a new chapel and the Margaret Francis Memorial Annex Building, dedicated to the Faith Formation Department. We have shared numerous moments of happiness and some sorrowful occasions. With faith in God's kindness, we eagerly anticipate even greater accomplishments for our faith in the coming years.
